With proper maintenance and regular check-ups CNG cylinders can last longer than many other energy storage solutions, even more than 20 years. Thanks to the long lifespan of CNG cylinders, the frequency of cylinder replacements is reduced and the energy and resources required for manufacturing a new CNG cylinder is minimized. Although CNG cylinders’ long lifespan has a great impact on the environment, all CNG cylinders that have reached the end of their life need to be recycled. Recycling process of CNG cylinders includes:
- Decommissioning: Recycling starts with CNG cylinder decommissioning, which includes safely releasing any residual gas.
- Disassembly: CNG cylinders are disassembled to separate different components. This includes the cylinder shell, valve systems and other possible materials.
- Material Recovery: Then the separated components are sent for material recovery. CNG cylinders’ metal components, like steel or aluminum, are mostly used to manufacture new products.
- Proper Disposal: Any non-recyclable materials or components that cannot be repurposed are disposed of with environmentally responsible methods.
